Traditionally, these are the three days before Ascension Day in which the litany is sung or said in procession as an act of intercession. In England, some congregations march around a field and "beat the bounds", that is encircle and bless the land, praying for its protection from harm and bountiful harvest.
The word rogation comes from the Latin verb rogare meaning "to ask." This comes from the Gospel reading of John 16:24 "Ask and ye shall receive."
At Grace Episcopal Church, we celebrate Rogation Sunday on the Sunday before Ascension Day. After the 10:00 service, the congregation travels to KinderKamp or another rural location to bless the land and have lunch. Those wishing to have their farms blessed by the Rector need to contact the church at 660-646-4288. Individual blessings will occur on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday after Rogation Sunday.
