Congratulations on your commitment to enter into the joys of Holy Matraamony! The community of faith here at Grace rejoices with you and is delighted to share in exciting time in your life.
Your first step in plannning a wedding at our church is to arrange an appointment with the Rector. Plan to have your talk at least 30 days before the date you want to have the ceremony. This is the minimum allowed by the Canons of the Episcopal Church.Practically speaking, much more notice is preferred.
At your initial meeting with the Rector, you will go over your wedding plans as well as the options you have for the ceremony. Also at this meeting, you will be provided with the forms you'll need to enter your date on the church calendar. Additionally, you'll review the Episcopal Church's understanding of marriage and preview what will be covered in your premarital instruction sessions.
Holy matrimony is a serious step and is not to be undertaken on a whim. It is a life-long union (Book of Common Prayer, page 105). There are several criteria to be met to be married in our church.
1. At least one of the couple must be a baptized Christian.
2. There must be no impediment to the marriage (for example, one of them is already married or other legal or canon issues).
3. There must be at least two witnesses.
4. The couple must attend three sessions of pre-marriage counseling.
5. All music, attire and decorations must be approved by the Rector.
6. Weddings are not conducted during Lent.
Additionally, while beauty and ceremony are good and appropriate, excessive and ostentatious display in decorations, flowers, clothing or food is not.
