The Easter Vigil is the first (and to some primary) celebration of Easter. It celebrates Jesus' return to the living and departure from the tomb. The service has four distinct parts:
A. The Service of Light, in which new fire is created, then the Paschal Candle is lit and carried to the front of the church
B. The Service of Lessons, readings from the Old Testament interspersed with Psalms, Canticles and prayers
C. Christian Initiation, Baptism or renewal of baptismal vows
D.The Holy Eucharist, the first celebration of it since Maundy Thursday
Some members of the congregation, especially those in The Order of the Daughters of the King and their families, keep vigil during all or part of the night until the celebration of Holy Eucharist on Easter Sunday.
