Preacher

A Preacher is a lay person authorized to preach. Persons so authorized shall only preach in congregations under the direction of the Member of the Clergy or other leader exercising oversight of the congregation or other community of faith.
From The Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church 4.5

The Preacher can, when the Priest is away or under the Priest's direction, deliver the homily for the service. The individual holding this license has demonstrated the ability to interpret a passage of scripture to enlighten the congregation.
