The week before Easter involves services of special devotion to reenact the last week of Christ's life as a mortal man. The practice of setting aside this time for reflection goes back to the earliest Christians. It was recorded by the pilgrim Egeria in the late 4th century. Pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem to visit the path of Jesus on His last day. The pilgrims formed processions, worshipped where Christ suffered and died and venerated relics. This evolved into the rites we observe during this week. Special services are held and scripture readings all reflect this time in our Lord's mortal life as well as, at the Easter Vigil, His glorious Resurrection.
